Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie (March 31)

Busy month that I am just catching up on now as it’s ended! I remember seeing the trailers for this movie at my local Alamo a few months back and laughing uncontrollably at the antics of these two guys riffing on each other and mentally logged time to see this movie and then it didn’t really have that long a run and I got busy doing other things probably and ended up watching it at home after it appeared on one of those lists of “best movies of 2026 so far,” where someone described it as remarkable as a stunt, which seemed like an odd way to describe a film debut for a comedy duo who’s already had more success than most with a cable show.

The movie is proof that two funny white guys can still succeed off the back of their own lack of charisma in the year of our Lord 2026. Toronto-based comedians Jay and Matt are eternal schemers looking for an easy way to play their dream venue, a mid-tier mixed industrial building of no real import in the city–the mediocrity of their image of success is itself a kind of self-indictment on these two clown characters–but the half-wit plans tire Jay, who attempts to set out on his own before (TWIST) traveling through time to a similarly ordinary 2008. The rest is brazen copyright violations of time travel movies and gonzo-style man-on-the-street footage of their antics to get back home.

As someone who just recently saw an encore screening of Wayne’s World (1992), I think I can say with some authority that I can spot an endless scroll of bits taped together into a movie, and Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie isn’t not that, but it’s also a screwball comedy with urgency and heart.
