Minions y Monstras (July 3)

Admittedly, I came to Minions pretty late in the game and only once I had children. I knew peers of mine who were obsessed with the Minions movies pre-pandemic and it always seemed like a pink flag for bad taste or at least people whose taste was overly adjusted for cringe. But my older demon had ended up seeing one of the sequels out of order during some summer festival for kids and I figured they’re all basically the same slop anyway so we broke our cardinal rule (no movies out of order) for this and only this movie basically ever and we had a great time. Since then, I had waited for this movie with rapt curiosity, mostly because I wondered if there were going to be a lot of middle school boys dressing up in suits for this movie or if they had all graduated and gone off to Cornell (October reference here!) since the 2022 memes.

And Robbie Collin at the Telegraph should also get his flowers for what I think is the earliest investigatory piece I can find in the current news cycle for a real adult journalist asking the question Do the Minions canonically work for Adolf Hitler? This work really got me especially interested in the apparent own goal that setting this movie in the lead up to the first world war would cause to the lore of the Minions which had very carefully and deliberately quarantined the Minions in earlier movies during this morally dubious period of the 20th century.

I don’t have a lot more to say about how amazing this movie was beyond the fact that the demons’ grandpa was laughing harder than any child in the theater. Friend almost compared it to the plot of Babylon before I told him to leave that name out of his mouth. There’s also some genuinely great writing for the romance plot. The twist(s) are also really well done. I haven’t really met anyone who likes movies regardless of their familiarity with the franchise who didn’t like Minions y Monstras, so I’m going to plead with you to check it out or at least put it on some obscure To-Do list for when you have kids.
